Important Latitudes and Longitudes
CBSE Class 6 General Knowledge
Unit 3: World Geography
Lesson: Important Latitudes and Longitudes
📘 Study Module: Important Latitudes and Longitudes
1. Introduction
The Earth is a spherical body, and to locate places accurately on its surface, imaginary lines called latitudes and longitudes are used. These lines form a grid system that helps in finding the exact position of any place on Earth.
2. Latitudes
Latitudes are imaginary horizontal lines drawn parallel to the Equator. They measure the distance of a place north or south of the Equator and are expressed in degrees (°).
3. Important Latitudes
The major latitudes are:
- Equator (0°)
- Tropic of Cancer (23½° North)
- Tropic of Capricorn (23½° South)
- Arctic Circle (66½° North)
- Antarctic Circle (66½° South)
These latitudes divide the Earth into different heat zones.
4. Longitudes
Longitudes are imaginary vertical lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole. They measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian and are also expressed in degrees.
5. Important Longitudes
The most important longitude is the Prime Meridian (0° longitude). The Earth is divided into the Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere based on this line.
6. Importance of Latitudes and Longitudes
Latitudes help in understanding climate and heat zones, while longitudes help in calculating time. Together, they help locate places accurately on maps and globes.

B. Long Answer Questions
(3–5 sentences each)
- Explain the meaning of latitudes.
Answer: Latitudes are imaginary lines drawn parallel to the Equator. They measure how far a place is from the Equator towards the north or south. Latitudes are expressed in degrees. They help divide the Earth into heat zones. - Describe the important latitudes of the Earth.
Answer: The important latitudes include the Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle, and Antarctic Circle. These latitudes divide the Earth into different climatic zones. They help in understanding temperature patterns. Each has a fixed degree value. - What are longitudes and why are they important?
Answer: Longitudes are imaginary lines running from pole to pole. They measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. Longitudes help in calculating local time. They are essential for global timekeeping. - Explain the Prime Meridian.
Answer: The Prime Meridian is the line of 0° longitude. It passes through Greenwich in England. It divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. All other longitudes are measured from it. - How do latitudes affect climate?
Answer: Latitudes determine how much sunlight a place receives. Areas near the Equator receive more heat. Regions near the poles receive less heat. Thus, latitudes influence climate. - Differentiate between latitudes and longitudes.
Answer: Latitudes run east to west and measure north-south distance. Longitudes run north to south and measure east-west distance. Latitudes help determine climate, while longitudes help calculate time. Both are measured in degrees. - What are heat zones?
Answer: Heat zones are regions based on temperature. They are divided using important latitudes. The three zones are Torrid, Temperate, and Frigid zones. Each zone receives different amounts of sunlight. - Why is the Equator important?
Answer: The Equator divides the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It receives maximum sunlight throughout the year. It is the reference point for measuring latitudes. Many warm regions lie near it. - Explain the significance of the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.
Answer: These circles mark the beginning of the cold regions of the Earth. Areas beyond them experience extreme cold. They have long days and nights. They define the Frigid Zones. - How do latitudes and longitudes help locate places?
Answer: Together, latitudes and longitudes form a grid system. This grid helps find the exact location of a place. Each place has a unique latitude and longitude. This system is used in maps and globes.
